BIOGRAPHY

Based in Naarm/Melbourne, Tash Atkins is a creative practitioner with a diverse background spanning theatre, opera, creative coding, immersive projection, and sound art. Her passion lies in fostering accessible and inclusive creative experiences that extend a warm welcome to all audiences, transcending barriers that often marginalize certain groups. This dedication to accessibility is underpinned by valuable experiences in community engagement, including the founding of her artists' collective Many Hands Make and contributions to Footscray Community Arts' ArtLife program, where she facilitated the Arts Industry engagement group.

As an artist, Tash Atkins specialises in blending theatre, classical music, creative coding, sound art, and projections to craft immersive experiences. Tash has also been utilising her love for projections and experimental sound art by extending her compositional practice into creative coding using Sonic Pi. A notable example is Out Of Sight. Out of Mind., created for Darebin Speakeasy's Let’s Take Over. This was a large-scale immersive installation that explored the invisibility of identity. In addition to Out of Sight. Out of Mind., Tash has also composed For Juliet, Breathing Space, and performed live coding sets for Melbourne Knowledge Week, Sunrise’s Moonrise and Code Like a Girl. She has also had their music used by the National Museum of Australia, Melbourne Fringe Festival, SIGNAL and Bunjil Place.

As a composer, Tash has also created works for theatre, film as well as writing her own show. In 2023, Tash collaborated with writer Kalina Lauer to write music for their show Bayou Bart. This involved writing a suite of songs to be performed by Tash throughout the show as a dramatic device. Tash has also been working on her original musical titled Julie, which is due to be workshopped in late 2024.

Tash also works as a performer and actor. They trained as a mezzo-soprano at the University of New South Wales. At UNSW, Tash earned first-class honours in music performance and worked with teachers Dr. Elizabeth Willis, Sonya Lifschitz, Michael Hooper, Dallas Watts, Sandy Evans and many more who influenced her. Whilst at university, she contributed to the musical and theatrical landscape of UNSW through performances with UNSW Musical Theatre Society, UNSW Theatrical Society, as well as a variety of performance ensembles including the Dallas Watts Colle Voce ensemble.

Since graduating in 2019, Tash has worked on honing their skills as an operatic mezzo-soprano with Heather Fletcher as her vocal teacher. She also worked as a Young Artist (2020-2021) with the Australian Contemporary Opera Company, performing in a variety of shows, including the 2020 Yarra Valley Opera Festival. Now, she is exploring a new fach and working on honing her skills whilst taking performance opportunities as a featured soloist at Collins St Baptist Church in the heart of Melbourne.

Throughout her career, Tash has honed her producing expertise both as an independent artist, as well as collaborating with the Sydney Fringe Festival, and working with organizations like the UNSW Musical Theatre Society.

Tash Atkins’ creative ethos as a facilitator and artist is firmly rooted in empathy and accessibility. Constantly seeking to push the boundaries of artistic form and explore new avenues for creative expression, her commitment to innovation and community engagement drives the thought-provoking experiences she creates for audiences.
